History

Since 1921, “1511 Commodore Rd.” has been providing lumber and building supplies to the Hillcrest area. Originally built by the three Telling brothers who were dairy farmers, and they called it Telling Lumber.  It was purchased by Paul J. Trumpp Sr. and Jr. in 1945 and incorporated as Lyndhurst Lumber. The Trumpp’s had a home building company, started in 1939, named Tru – Bilt Homes, Inc. They constructed many of the large homes in the Cleveland Heights – Shaker Heights area and saw a need to have a local supply house for their construction needs. As the area grew, Lyndhurst Lumber became a trusted place to purchase lumber and building materials.

While roofing a home in 1959, Paul Sr. died of a heart attack leaving Paul Jr. to carry on the construction business as well as the lumber yard. Paul Jr. continued both businesses until his untimely death in 1975.

The early ‘70’s showed a movement of people doing their own work; “DIY” (do it yourself). This “new wave” of customers would demand more time servicing and educating them about projects that they would undertake. Paul’s time was being used more and more at the sales counter.

From 1969, the future son – in – law, Britt K. Raburn, worked part time while attending Bowling Green State University and serving in the Army. After the Army, he taught in South – Euclid Lyndhurst School District. Upon the untimely death of Paul Jr. in 1975, Paulette (Paul Jr.’s daughter and wife to Britt) and Britt decided to continue the business. With the support of Mary Trumpp (Paul Jr.’s wife), who worked as the bookkeeper of Lyndhurst Lumber from 1957 – 2000, the tradition of Lyndhurst Lumber was able to continue. At the passing of Mary in 2000, Britt and Paulette decided to continue the family legacy of brining “home town pride” to the Lyndhurst community.

Lyndhurst Lumber has continued to provide excellent service, products and education to our customers. The process included the acquisition of Leiden Plywood & Lumber in Eastlake, Ohio in 1985, now known as East – Lynd Lumber at 800 Erie St. In 1989, Lyndhurst Lumber went through an update from the “Red Barn” to the retail space it is now today. In 1995, the Window & Door Solution Center was created at 5402 Mayfield Rd and was later moved back into the space of Lyndhurst Lumber in 2017. The world was introduced to Lyndhurst Lumber in 2004 when they launched their website. Continuing the tradition of service, Lyndhurst Lumber is committed to putting their customers first and adapting to the changes of the new century.

Over the decades, the lumberyard has expanded to include residential and commercial construction supplies, as well as remodeling design services and exterior projects. The next generation—daughter Jessica and husband Jim Mormino—have joined the business, and they look forward to carrying on the family tradition into the next century. The tagline “Hometown Pride” means as much today as it did back in 1921.
